I often get bad, tension headaches after getting home from work. The massage units sqeeze quite hard on my tight muscles and loosens them up. I use it while sitting on the sofa and watching TV. Feels great and fits around my neck nicely. -- Love It!
The predecessor, the SM-100, while it lacked heat, had the massage elements more appropriately placed - the side muscles got the massage treatment.
I've had my SM-100 for 5 years. I know it won't last forever, it's held up well, and I hope it will continue to do so. But noting it is no longer made, it seemed logical to find a replacement. So I started here, with Homedics as their product line isn't all that bad...
Some background: Due to an accident by a chiropractor, I had to have neck surgery and vertebrae fusion. As a result, some neck mobility is lost and certain exercises increase pressure on the surrounding discs - like my job doesn't do enough of that already. (Oh, and I'll get the "preexisting condition, insurance coverage denied" treatment too. Sheesh, it's like being born is a preexisting condition, but I digress.)
This new version has the massage elements smack along the back of the unit. I have to lay on the side to get any benefit, and then turn to the other side. Or, when sitting up, using it at a 90 degree angle.
Using heat, after 15 minutes, I feel like an overcooked omelet because the device gets hotter and hotter and hotter. And hotter! (Where did QC go, anyway?)
Sitting upright, it's a bit better as the top of the shoulders gets a partial massage treatment as well. So it's not all that bad. But I really miss a proper shiatsu neck massage device. The SM-100 was near-perfection.
Ultimately, it's an okay device and the heat, used for short periods of time, is a nice addition. But I miss the layout of the SM-100. I suspect the lifespan of this new model won't be as long, either. :(

I was given a HoMedics "Neck and Shoulder Shiatsu Massager with Heat" as a gift, and I'm a glad as it not something I would have bought for myself. I have a neck problem caused by arthritis and it is amazing how much relief the massaging and heat brings in just a few minute of use.
This is a well made and good looking unit that sits comfortably around your neck. It must be plugged in to work and it comes with a fairly long cord. There are two options, Massage or Massage with Heat. The massage strength and heat setting cannot be adjusted, but the factory settings are just about perfect for me. I also like that there two handholds that makes it easy to direct where the massaging nubs press.
This was a good gift that works much better than I expected it too!
